  • 2 cups of all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup light brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract


  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda and salt.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together the oil, sugars, eggs, buttermilk and vanilla extract until smooth.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, whisking until just combined.
  5. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

  • 3 1/2 cups confectioners’ sugar
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • 4-6 tablespoons heavy cream


  1. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat the butter until creamy.
  2. Add the confectioners’ sugar, cocoa powder, vanilla extract and salt and beat on low speed until combined.
  3. Add 4 tablespoons of the cream and beat on medium-high speed until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes.
  4. Add more cream, if needed, to reach desired consistency.
  5. Spread the frosting onto the cooled cake.
